Naturalization is the process by which an individual will become a lawful U.S. citizen. There are various steps that must be taken and certain eligibility requirements that must be met. If you fulfill these requirements and your application is accepted then you may be granted citizenship by the United States Government. There are various prerequisites and requirements that have been established by Congress in the immigration and nationality act, these requirements include:
- You must be at least 18 years of age
- You must be a lawful permanent resident of the U.S.
- You must have maintained consistent residency for the past five years
- You must be of good moral character and have refrained from criminal activity
- You must have at least an elementary understanding of the English language
- You must have a basic understanding of U.S. history and politics
To apply for naturalization you must fill out an application called the N-400 form. Once this application is processed, you will be required to meet with an employee from USCIS (United States Citizenship and immigration Services) for an interview. In this interview you will be tested on your understanding of English, and U.S. politics and history. Subsequent to this interview you will receive notice that your application has been accepted, rejected or continuing. If you receive notice that your application is continuing then this means that additional documentation is required, or that you need to retake a test.
